GARMENT DISTRICT QUESTIONS

Q: What is the Garment District? Where is it located?
A: The Garment District is the epicenter of fashion in NYC. The neighborhood contains fabric and trim stores, wholesalers, showrooms, sample makers, factories and manufacturers, and other fashion industry resources.

The Garment District is located along the west side of midtown Manhattan. The borders are roughly defined as 34th Street to the south, 42nd Street to the north, Fifth Avenue to the east, and Ninth Avenue to the west.

Q: What is included in a Garment District tour?
A: A typical Garment District tour contains a mix of fabric and trim stores, fashion industry landmarks (Bryant Park, Fashion Walk of Fame), and garment and retail industry history (including the history of famous department stores such as Macy’s and Lord & Taylor) and is led by a professional designer. Private tours include a custom itinerary and can be designed to focus on history/sightseeing, fabric shopping, or a mix of both.

Q: Is the Garment District tour appropriate for my son/daughter?
A: Our Garment District tours are perfect for fashion and costume design students, aspiring designers, and anyone with an interest in the fashion industry! Our tours have been enjoyed by aspiring designers as young as age 8; please let us know if your group includes children or teens, so that we can customize the itinerary to meet their needs.

Q: When are private Garment District tours offered?
A: Private Garment District tours are generally offered Monday - Friday between the hours of 9 AM - 6 PM, and Saturdays between the hours of 10 AM - 4 PM. Specific time slots are based on guide availability. Please note that we do not offer Garment District tours on Sundays, as most of the businesses in the neighborhood are closed.

Q: When is Fashion Week? Do you offer any special tours or activities?
A: New York Fashion Week is held in September and February. If you’re planning a visit during Fashion Week, we encourage you to book a spot on one of our popular Fashion Week tours. Dates sell out well in advance, and early booking is recommended!

Q: Does the tour visit Mood Fabrics?
A: Yes, we always try to include Mood Fabrics in of our Garment District tours! Please let us know if you’ve already been to Mood and would rather not stop there during the tour, so that we might plan the itinerary accordingly.

Q: Can I visit a showroom or factory during my Garment District tour?
A: With the exception of Fashion Week, this is not generally something that is included in our standard Garment District tours. Special arrangements can sometimes be made for school groups, depending on group size.

Q: Can I shop for clothing and accessories during my Garment District tour?
A: The Garment District is primarily the center of industry resources, such as factories and fabric stores, rather than a shopping destination. Our Garment District tours do not include visits to clothing designer showrooms. For clothing and accessories, consider a private shopping tour of a neighborhood such as SoHo, the East Village/Lower East Side, or the Upper West Side.

Q: Where can I read reviews of Seek’s Garment District tour?
A: Please visit our Feedback Page or our Trip Advisor Page to read customer reviews.

A: We understand that things like traffic and train delays are sometimes unavoidable. While we hope you’ll be on time, we do allow a 15-minute grace period to account for situations such as these. We allow the same grace period at the end of a session, in case it takes longer than expected to ring up final purchases.

Should your tour or appointment run
more than 30 minutes beyond the time you have scheduled and paid for, payment will be required prior to the start of any additional time you’d like to spend with the stylist/guide. Tour overtime is billed at the rate of $25 per person per hour; styling overtime at the rate of $125 per hour.

Q: Why should I book a tour guide? Wouldn't it be cheaper just to buy a map?
If you're a visitor to our city, there is simply no comparison between hiring an experienced tour guide and exploring the city on your own. With a Seek guide, you're not just getting a customized itinerary. We're also great at the practical stuff. Nervous about taking the subway or haven't mastered the art of hailing a cab? We'll show you how. We know which department stores have the nicest bathrooms, where to find a coffee shop with comfortable seating, and the closest place to get a great bite to eat.

Q: Are your tour guides licensed?
A: Yes. If you book a tour with Seek New York Tours, you can rest assured that your guide will be fully licensed by the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs.

Q: Where does my tour start?
A: Tours meet at various locations (generally a well-known store or landmark) throughout the city. Hotel pickup is available for private tours. Keep in mind that if requesting hotel pickup, transportation (cab or subway, not included in tour price) may be required if you are planning to tour in a neighborhood other than the one where your hotel is located, and may occupy 15-30 minutes of your allotted tour time.

Q: Can you make theatre or restaurant recommendations?
A: Yes. We love New York City and are happy to share our secrets! Feel free to ask your guide for advice on museums, theatre, restaurants, transportation, real estate, or anything else you'd like to know.

Q: Can you show me where to buy knockoff sunglasses, handbags, etc.?
A: No. The sale of counterfeit items is illegal in New York CIty. In the interest of safety (and to show our support for legitimate retailers), we do not take our guests to places selling illegal goods or endorse the purchase of these items.

Q: Do you offer tours on holidays?
A: We do not offer tours on July 4, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, Easter, or New Year's Day, as most stores are closed on these holidays. Additionally, we do not offer tours on Black Friday or Christmas Eve, as we've found that excessive crowds make for a less-than-enjoyable tour experience on these days. Pending guide availability, we do offer NYC shopping tours on other holidays (Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, etc.) though tour itinerary is subject to change due to closings at individual stores. Parades and other New York City events may also affect available tour dates and/or itineraries.

Q: What happens if it rains?
A: Tours are held rain or shine. In the event of severe weather, Seek New York LLC reserves the right to amend tour routes or to cancel a tour. Customers impacted by severe weather cancellation may opt to reschedule their tour or receive a full refund.

Q: Do you offer personal shopping or styling services?
A: Yes! Please visit this page to learn more about our personal styling experience.

Q: What is the difference between personal styling and a private shopping tour?
A: Our shopping tours are a popular option for visitors who want to see the city while enjoying "free time" for shopping in lots of different stores. They are ideal for anyone who wants to cover a lot of ground in a short period of time, and for those who want to shop with a group of friends or family. While our tours do include a customized itinerary, they do not include the detailed style questionnaire, pre-appointment analysis, or extensive one-on-one attention that comes with a personal styling session. Styling appointments tend to focus on one or two stores (and often with a specific goal in mind), with fitting appointments arranged in advance. In some cases, the stylist will also do some pre-shopping at stores to decide where a client's time will be best spent. Specialty services, such as a bra fitting, can also be arranged for styling clients.
